There Is A New Vaccine That Claims To Prevent Herpes Zoster
Very painful, persistent & troublesome disease that affects those who experienced varicella at some time in their life.
Have you been struggling with shingles symptoms? If you responded in a positive way, we have good and exciting news for you.
Not a long ago, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved the new Merck vaccine to prevent shingles to appear in people over sixty years of age; “the first & only medical alternative approved for the prevention of herpes zoster,” said William Schaffner, MD, professor of preventive medicine at the School of Medicine, Vanderbilt University, Nashville.
This disease shows mainly with blister-like eruptions. This is due to reactivation of the virus that causes chickenpox & can lead to different shingles symptoms, such as severe complications together with long-term nerve pain (postherpetic neuralgia) that may last months or even years.
The new vaccine, it should be noted, isn’t a treatment for shingles or postherpetic neuralgia. It consists in the administration of a single dose injection.
Any person who, in the past, has had chickenpox is predisposed to contract this disease. Incidence, frequency & severity of complications increases with age, especially after sixty years.
“This vaccine is clinically important since it can prevent a disease that can cause pain in patients,” said Ann Arvin, MD, professor of paediatrics, infectious diseases & microbiology & immunology at the School of Medicine from Stanford University who studied the vaccine: “It is unique because unlike other vaccines that help prevent a primary infection, this new vaccine helps to prevent reactivation of a virus already inside the body.”
Shingles symptoms frequently start out as an unusual or painful sensation on 1 side of the body or face, followed by a blister-like rash. The pain ranges from mild to severe & can occur before & during the development of the rash outburst, & can become visible as a long-term nerve pain.
Postherpetic neuralgia can be best described as a burning pressure, throbbing, stabbing, piercing &/or acute pain. Other complications such as fibrous scarring, allodynia (pain from innocuous stimuli, like touch of soft clothing or a light breeze), pneumonia, visual impairment & hearing loss may occur as a result of herpes. Treatment of shingles symptoms & postherpetic neuralgia can be difficult, often requiring a multifaceted approach.
